Teijo National Park – Traditional Forest Hut on Lake Matildanjärvi
Reconnect with nature at Teijo National Park
Nestled on the northern shore of Lake Matildanjärvi, within the Teijo National Park in Southwest Finland, this rustic “kota” (wood-hut) offers a simple yet unforgettable nature stay. The area is known for diverse landscapes — lakes, wetlands, pine forests and rugged rocky shores.
The hut
Step into a recently renovated wooden shelter, built for up to six guests with wide benches that convert into sleeping platforms. The hut features a solid wooden floor, warm lambswool cushions, an inside fire-pit for outdoor dinners.
With no running water or electricity this is a genuine off-grid escape for those seeking simplicity and wilderness immersion.
What to expect
Capacity: up to six people on bench-platforms.
Bring: sleeping bag & mattress, drinking water, cooking gear, torch, matches/lighter, your own cutlery.
Facilities: outside fireplace, outhouse / compost toilet, woodshed.
Embrace minimal impact living: abide by Leave No Trace guidelines — compost organic waste, burn fire-wood permissible waste, carry out all non-burnable or recyclable trash.
Activities & surroundings
Set in one of the most popular Southern Finland national parks, you’ll have direct access to:
Hiking the scenic Matildanjärvi loop and other trails in the park (approx. 50 km of marked trails).
Paddling on Lake Matildanjärvi — calm waters make it perfect for kayaks, SUPs or rowing.
Relaxing in the rich nature of southwest Finland: pine forests, wetlands, a coastline influence from the Archipelago Sea.
Location & access
Located in the northern part of Teijo National Park, the hut offers both seclusion and convenience:
Situated on Lake Matildanjärvi’s northern shore.
Parking area (Mikkossuo) approx. 700 m away from the hut on minor trail.
Sustainability & experience value
Your stay at Teijo contributes to nature-connection and low-impact tourism:
With no lights or utilities, you’ll enjoy dark-sky nights, the sounds of the forest and lake, and true downtime.
The park’s nature is varied and ecologically important — eutrophic fens, pine forests, and unique wetlands that are disappearing elsewhere in southern Finland.
This is a perfect choice for travellers seeking slow travel, digital detox, nature immersion and local authenticity.
Groups & extra services
Ideal for: family get-aways, company nature-days, or small adventure groups. Rent the hut as a gathering point and we can help arrange:
Outdoor workshops or guided nature walks.
Add-on equipment: SUPs, kayaks, bikes, etc from the Nature Centre.
Pets
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash outside the hut. Please clean up responsibly and follow park guidelines.
